A dermal filler is placed in the lip to change shape, definition or volume.
Shape and definition are usually what people are actually after, even when they ask for volume. A lip that has been given size without structure tends to be the look people are trying to avoid.
How we assess lips
We look at the balance between upper and lower lip, at the distance between nose and lip, at how much of your teeth shows when you talk and smile, and at what your lips do when your face moves rather than only when it's still.
Some asymmetry is normal in almost everybody. Matching the two sides exactly is not the goal and chasing it usually makes things worse.
When we advise against it
When the size being asked for won't sit on your face. When you've had filler before and we don't know what was used or when. When there's something in your history that needs discussing first, such as a tendency to cold sores.
Occasionally the honest answer is that your lips are fine and what's bothering you is somewhere else entirely.
Risks worth understanding
Swelling and bruising are expected. Lips swell more than people anticipate, and they look their worst before they look their best.
Firm areas or small lumps can develop and sometimes need reviewing.
The one that matters most is uncommon and serious. Filler can block a blood vessel, which cuts off blood supply to the tissue it feeds. It needs recognising and treating urgently. This is why we ask in detail about previous treatment, why we examine the area rather than working from photographs you've sent, and why we tell you exactly what to look for afterwards and how to reach us quickly. Pain that's getting worse rather than better, or skin that changes colour, is not something to sit on overnight.
Facial ultrasound may be used where clinically appropriate to support anatomical assessment or treatment planning.

You'll get written aftercare before you leave. Where a review makes sense we'll arrange one, rather than booking you in automatically for the sake of it.
How long filler lasts differs between people and between areas. We'll talk about that at your appointment.
